AMY HECKERLING
Amy Heckerling…What a bad ass. NEW DIRECTOR CRUSH ALERT. Not only did this woman write and direct CLUELESS (i know right?) but her premiere studio film she directed and co wrote was FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH (riiiiiiight?!?!?).
What an insanely brilliant woman, powerhouse story crafter and purveyor of characters.
She discovered Sean Penn. Launched Paul Rudd and Alicia Silverstone and Jennifer Jason Leigh’s careers (among others) and made culture icons and phrases that will forever stand the test of time. AS IF…but no they really will.
Amy also directed and wrote Look Who’s Talking which gained like $100+ millions at the box office which was one of her goals - she had two goals she made in film school, 1) make a studio feature film (fast times) and 2) make money like a boy film not just a “girl film” money level but money like a boy film….which she did….I LOVE THIS WOMAN.
I feel inspired by her because she loves “silly things” and enjoys playfulness and stories that make fun of people in a not-mean way. She also uses real inspirations in her life, she was pregnant and wrote Look Who’s Talking and then read Emma in school and realized the CLUELESS screenplay was following that story arc so double-downed on that and boom, it helped fuel it up. Amy didn’t back down on the kinds of movies she wanted to make and was focused and definitive on music/casting/production/costumes all the things (obvi) that make up the films. She was specific and creative and funny and iconic - all things I care about and what to make. She has all the wow-factor grace I hope to have. I just really like her a whole lot.
SO if you don’t know much about the woman who gave us so much movie and TV joy - read up on her.
