Girl Crush Clauda Weill: GIRLFRIENDS (1978)

Watched a super inspiring film tonight by a female director named Claudia Weill who made this film called Girlfriends in 1978.

It was her first real film and it was so insanely awesome it got picked up by Warner Bros and admitted into the national film archives. She's a cool lady, the film was simple but profound and spoke directly to being a creative woman, also showed NYC in the 70s…truthful and artistic without trying to be.

Exquisite acting. So well done. I felt very much like the main gal, wanting to remain alone, fearful of committing to a boy because discard is inevitable. Wanting friends but also not knowing what to do with them, thinking I have zero friends and then bumping into one. Experimenting with older men, sabotaging big career breaks, giving over my power to people I guess I trust…Girlfriends whispers all these moments in life.

As I explore more women directors, I get more fired up and spiced up. I think Frances Ha was inspired by Girlfriends and I like to think Greta Gerwig saw this and was like YA I want to direct too! I shall write Frances Ha with Noah Baumbach and then direct my own thing my own way very soon. I am musing, of course…

Thank you, Claudia Weill. Your style is definitely sitting in the same room as my style, and I like to think our two styles could have a cold pizza together and laugh about the bird names.
